You have many successes
to show for your 10, 20, 30
years of mid life.

You’ve worked hard, learned much, played a fair bit, developed a whole host of fine skills, and in return you’ve been rewarded with your share of means, money and material, alongside the security and safety of relative predictability day to day, week to week, month to month, year to year.

Now it’s mid life – that expanse of time between your mid thirties and mid sixties – and you’re suddenly – or perhaps not so suddenly – starting to have some rather serious doubts about whether you can continue doing what you’re doing, in the ways you’ve been doing it, with the people you have been doing it with, in the environments you’ve been doing it in, from the mindset you’ve been doing it from.

The doubts have kinda snuck up on you; soft whispers at first, mere winks and nudges, until more recently when they’ve been showing up as stiff elbows to your gut, rude interruptions, swift kicks in the proverbial butt, to get you to pay closer attention.

In many ways, if you are anything like I was when it happened to me, you would just as soon bury your dissatisfaction way down below the surface of your consciousness; pretend it’s not really there, try to ignore it, cling to the mistaken belief that it will go away if you do.

This is the understandable draw because you can sniff the odour of uncertainty on the horizon. Yet, in the way that matters most, you also sense this unease is something that’s in your best interests to pay attention to; a warning to be heeded, a disguised invitation…even as that big part of you that wants to cling to the status quo is now kicking up a fuss.

Erin’s Back Story

Erin’s Mid Life Angst
Began with her Business

When Erin’s adult daughter confronted her and said, ‘Mom, why are you so angry all the time?’, it shocked her into realizing she had become uncharacteristically irritable, short tempered, and critical, both at home and at work. Coincidentally, one of her key employees recently left saying, ‘It just isn’t the fun and creative work environment it once was’.

Erin was having to admit to herself that they were both right. “I’ve been in denial; the way I’ve been running my business, and even more accurately, the way my business has been running my life, has made it abundantly clear to me that we’re both past our ‘Best Before Date’. What’s worst is I’m not even seeing the results for my efforts. I’m admittedly a perfectionist, been working my tail off, and despite this my revenues have plateaued.”
